GGRC Aid Station at the Kaiser Half Marathon – Sign Up to Volunteer!

A big focus for GGRC in 2017 is to give back – especially to the running community.  What better way to kick it off than at one of GGRC’s favorite events – manning (and womanning) an aid station at the Kaiser Half Marathon!  And we want to get as many GGRC members to volunteer as we can!

GGRC aid station

Where: Great Highway & Noriega (ish)
When: Sunday Feb 5th (Super Bowl Sunday!) 7AM – 11AM
Who: at least 30 super-cool volunteers to help and cheer during the event
Why (do it): Because it’s a nice thing to do.  And you will get to see all the runners (most notably our GGRC participants) pass us TWICE on the course. Plus it’s fun!  Costumes encouraged.
What (do you get out of it): Aside from the warm, fuzzy feeling of being a stellar human being – you will get a Kaiser shirt (first 30 to sign up) for participating, as well as delicious breakfast foods and drinks during the event.
How to sign up: Visit the Google Group for a link to the sign-up sheet, or email Prez Sam for more info.

We’ve done the handicapped mile …

We’ve done the denim mile …

This time, we’ll test your legs, your lungs, AND your liver with our annual beer mile challenge.

What’s the beer mile, you might ask? (You know, if you’re a n00b.) Only one of the best – and most representative – GGRC events of the year. We’ll follow the standard Beer Mile rules (found here), but in summary:

  • You’ll run four, quarter-mile laps – each one preceeded by drinking a full beer
  • Your beer must be 5% ABV or higher.
  • Either bottles or cans are allowed (the one exception to the ‘official’ rules).
  • However – there shall be no tampering with the cans and/or specialty cans (e.g., wide mouth) allowed.
  • The prize: supreme GGRC glory, and a well-earned afternoon buzz in the park.

Note: This mile will be timed, filmed, and potentially used against you during future GGRC events (banquet is always right around the corner). Exhibit A.

No need for the fun to end after the beer mile is done; we’re also hosting a pot-luck BBQ and sloshball in the park. You’re welcome to participate (and bring friends) even if you don’t take part in the beer mile. It’s just as much fun to watch as it is to compete!

To recap …

WHAT: GGRC Annual Beer Mile

WHERE: Hellman’s Hollow, Golden Gate Park

WHEN: Saturday, September 3rd from 2:30pm – 5:30pm

WHY: To close out the summer, GGRC style

BRING: Yourself, four 5%+ ABV beers, your friends and some snacks or drinks for the pot-luck

GGRC “Feliz” Hour: Tuesday, August 23

Uno Dos Tacos

Make your month a little spicier with GGRC’s August happy hour at Uno Dos Tacos. We’re planning to set up shop in the outdoor seating area to enjoy some sangria, cerveza and tequila ‘al aire fresco’ (strong chance of chips, salsa, and guac as well)! As if that weren’t reason enough, we’ll also be sending off the Santa Rosa marathon crew, in their last few days of taper.

Hope you can make it – and don’t forget to bring your amigos!

What: GGRC August “Feliz” Hour at Uno Dos Tacos
Where: The alley at 2nd & Stevenson (just off of Market St.)
When: 6pm (ish) – 9pm (ish) on Tuesday, August 23rd

2nd Annual GGRC Denim Mile

GGRC Denim Mile
7pm Wednesday, August 17th at Kezar Stadium,
The stated goal is simple – run a mile as fast as you can in full-length jeans.
The actual goal is even simpler – make pretty big asses of ourselves on a crowded track full of serious runners.
This year’s theme is ‘Peak Hotness‘ – a little triple entendre as it’ll hopefully be one of the warmest times of the year; Kezar is nicely in the shadow of Twin Peaks; and we think you’ll all be looking your hottest with your butts covered in denim.
Feel free to costume up or add a little on-theme flare if you want to max out your peak hotness. Show Hof what he’s been missing.
This will be a single mixed-gender heat and it will take place during the first ~15 minutes of track after warm up (regular workout likely to follow).
We had a blast last year and this year looks to be at least as awful/amazing. Still not convinced? Think of it as the ultimate equipment check. How do you really know that those expensive running shorts are worth it if you’ve never run a mile in full-length jeans? Oh, you already know from last year? Then I guess you’d better get out there and PR!
There will of course be ribbons and we even have some secret party favors for all participants this year…
1. NO JORTS. Full length jeans required. Overalls are fine so long as the legs are full length.
2. NO JEGGINGS. This classic race is about classic denim.
3. Some stretch or rips in your jeans are fine, but don’t deliberately pick jeans to aid your comfort or speed. This is about testing the limits of uncomfortable.
4. We’re not going to be sticklers for the rules, just do your best. Participation will be favored over any technicalities.
1. Classic blue jeans if you’ve got them. All of our color-coordinated butts on the waterfall start is going to make for another sweet Facebook cover photo!
2. Costumes went over really well last year and are definitely encouraged. Brawny man flannel shirt? Yes! Mountainous bear pelt (real bear or homegrown)? Absolutely! Painfully amazing Canadian Rockies tuxedo? Sure worked well for Kessler last year, eh!
3. For those not interested in running a mile at full speed in full length jeans (what’s wrong with you?), feel free to come cheer or jeer your brave, soon-to-be-chafed GGRC friends!
Hope to see you there!

Destination Run: Berkeley Fire Trails (7/14)

oWe’re changing it up for this Sunday’s run – come join us on the Berkeley Fire Trails!  We’ll be running a 6.4 mile route (see it here), and heading over to Jupiter for a little Sunday beer and brunch action when we’re done.

A little more about the run: The course features hilly, trail terrain. It may be a bit more challenging than the Embarcadero, but the change of scenery will be well worth it! There are advanced options to go further, if desired, and – since it is an out-and-back – you can also make it shorter. Note: many of us will be extending the run by starting at parking locations and/or continuing on to Jupiter at the end.

A little more about transportation: The plan is to meet at 10am, near the top of the University of California at the corner of Bancroft and College in Berkeley, across from Caffe Strada (map here). You can take the Bart into Downtown Berkeley, or drive and park nearby (note: parking can be tricky). If you’re interested in offering or finding a ride, we’ve started a spreadsheet here – be sure to sign-up.

We are excited to take this show on the road with you. See you Sunday!

What: Destination run
Where: Berkeley Fire Trails, meet here
When: Sunday, 7/14 @ 10am
What else: Brunch and beer at Jupiter, immediately following
